Advance Illinois

How do we recover from the effects COVID-19 is having on our school communities.

Founded in 2008 through the collaborative efforts of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, and the Boston Consulting Group, Advance Illinois is an independent policy and advocacy organization working to foster a healthy public education system that will prepare students to achieve success in college, career and civic life.

In the spring of 2020, Illinois was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic, changing what school looks like for children and families across the state. To understand what Illinois' school communities are experiencing in this moment and what they will require in the long term to recover and rebuild, Advance Illinois hosted a series of focus groups in the fall of 2020 with high school students and parents/caregivers of students of all ages.

The 32-page report Multiple has created reflects those conversations' findings, calling attention to the participants' experiences and concerns.

Callout quotes from participants are spread throughout the report drawing on the importance of listening to those directly impacted by this crisis.

A color-coded system breaks up primary report themes with strong, impactful statements on section divider pages. While the use of silhouetted photography helps represent students, parents, and caregivers anonymously.
A social media campaign was created to draw more awareness to the work of Advance Illinois as they better understand the educational impact by the COVID-19 pandemic.
